Reports on a survey funded by the Home Office and undertaken by the Family Rights Group. The survey looked at the experiences of the grandparent carers and attempted to identify why grandparents take on a caring role, what help they need as carers, and whether existing support mechanisms meet their needs and those of their grandchildren. In phase one of the study 169 questionnaires were completed by grandparents in England and Wales, who were contacted via existing support groups; social services departments, and other organisations incontact with grandparents. An additional 11 responses were provided by Pakistani Muslim grandmothers. In phase two of the study a series of focus groups were conducted with grandparent carers.
