On the importance of motivation in Munchausen by Proxy: the case of Kathy Bush

Uses a case example of the trial of Kathy Bush in the USA for abusing her daughter to show the nature of motivation in some cases of Munchausen by Proxy. Also discusses the importance of distinguishing the motivation found in Munchausen by Proxy from that found in other forms of child abuse and other conditions involving factitious illness production.

Filicide - or child killing by parents or parent substitutes such as stepfathers - has recently received much media and public attention, but there has still been relatively little systematic research carried out on the subject. This article discusses the results of a study which examined the different motivations for filicide. It also draws attention to the gender differences in filicide motivation.
