This article aims to provide a detailed overview of the current state of knowledge about Munchausen by proxy syndrome (MBP). It begins with a brief history of the syndrome, its epidemiology, definitions and current and future trends in diagnosis, as well as issues around misdiagnosis. The management of MBP cases covers medical and psychosocial therapy and concerns about placement and contact. Legal issues are briefly touched upon. The discussion is informed by a comprehensive review of the literature and supplemented by the authors' experience with cases referred to their practice. They intend that this article will help to dispel some of the sensationalism that can surround the disorder and help to educate professionals who deal with the families involved so that more accurate diagnoses can be made and the child victims protected.
