This study investigated attitudes toward financial elder abuse by sections of the Australian community using three focus groups, including aged care workers (aged 40-59), older adults (aged 55-76), and younger adults (aged 8-26). Participants were provided discussion cues prior to their focus group (i.e., What is financially abusive behavior? Why does it occur? How can it be prevented?). Two researchers authenticated the transcripts and identified micro- and macro-level themes within and across the groups. The study revealed a range of similar, different, and individual attitudes expressed across the groups, which could be used to develop a survey for a broader investigation of the role of individual attitudes and social/cultural norms in financial elder abuse. This draft guideline covers keeping adults in care homes safe from abuse and neglect. It includes potential indicators of abuse and neglect (by individuals and by organisations), and covers the safeguarding process from identifying a concern through to conducting a safeguarding enquiry. There are recommendations on policy, training and care home culture, to help care homes improve staff awareness of safeguarding and ensure they are willing and able to report concerns when needed. The consultation closes on 1 October 2020 and the final version is due for publication on 10 February 2021. (Edited publisher abstract)

Older parents of an adult child coping with a mental disorder that is expressed by violent deviant behaviour face significant parenting challenges. The purpose of this article is to explore the ways older parents exposed to abuse by their adult children with mental disorder (ACMD) perceived their child’s violent deviant behaviour along the life course. In a qualitative-phenomenological study, 16 parents aged 58 to 90 were interviewed in depth. Three major themes emerged: (a) ongoing total care for the child’s needs along the life course, (b) constructions and perceptions of the child through the years—Parents perceived their children over two continua, reflecting their experience of the child’s deviant behaviour: the child as more harmed versus more harmful, the child as normative versus pathological—and (c) the parent’s emotional world toward the harmed–harmful child. The findings enable a deeper understanding of the various ways in which parents cope with living with deviant behaviours of their ACMD. Hence, this study can serve as a framework for developing tailored and differential intervention methods. (Edited publisher abstract)
