Drawing on data from research in Canada involving in-depth interviews with 35 men and women aged between 73 and 91 years, this article examines the ways in which older adults with multiple chronic conditions talk about and prepare for death and dying. It reports on the findings of analysis of the transcribed interviews, which identified three main themes: the pervasiveness and inevitability of death, individuals' hopes for and fears about death and their end-of-life plans. Illustrative quotations from the interviews are included. The authors discuss participants' perceptions about death and dying, and highlight the importance of providing opportunities for older adults to speak about their thoughts, feelings and concerns regarding death and dying.
