NICE quality standard covers the assessment, management and care provided for people aged 14 and over who have coexisting severe mental illness and substance misuse. It contains four quality statements which describe what high-quality care looks like in priority areas for improvement. The four quality statements cover: identification of coexisting substance misuse, exclusion from services, care coordinators, and follow-up after missed appointments. The standard expects to contribute to improvements in outcomes for mortality rates, rates of substance misuse and satisfaction with care. (Edited publisher abstract)

It aims to provide coordinated services that address people's wider health and social care needs, as well as other issues such as employment and housing. The guidelines includes recommendations covering: staff who may be the first point of contact with young people and adults with coexisting severe mental health problems and substance misuse; staff referring young people or adults to secondary care mental health services; care planning; partnership working between specialist services, health, social care and other support services; improving service delivery by making services more inclusive and supporting staff; and maintaining contact between services and people who use services. The guideline also provides advice to consider to help put the guidelines in practice and provides recommendations for future research. (Edited publisher abstract)
