The purpose of this outcomes tool is to support the delivery of quality services for people with co-existing mental health and substance misuse difficulties (dual diagnosis), through a better understanding of service user perspectives. It is recommended that it should be used as a practical tool to stimulate ongoing discussion and development in improving services for people with a dual diagnosis. It was informed by feedback obtained from commissioners, practitioners and over 60 former and current service users from across the country between August 2009 and March 2010. The document is structured around the stages of the treatment pathway: engagement; assessment; treatment; and recovery and relapse prevention. Each section contains: quotes and direct feedback from people using services; outcomes which service users would like to see; some commissioning principles which underpin the outcomes; and links with current national policy guidance and best practice examples. This document is accompanied by workshop material designed to help identify and prioritise what is important regionally and locally.
