Racism, IQ and Down's Syndrome

There is a consistent difference of some 15 IQ points between the test means of American black and white citizens, and there has been a fierce debate as to whether this can be best accounted for by black intellectual inferiority or by such environmental factors as prejudice and discrimination. However, even supporters of the environmental hypothesis have neglected to apply it to the population - people with Down's Syndrome - to which it is most clearly applicable, and this failure of imagination indicates the boundaries of discourse in the field of intellectual disability. Case report: challenging behaviour in a young adult with Down's Syndrome and autism

An association between Down's Syndrome and autism is reviewed. A case of severe challenging behaviour in a young adult with Down's Syndrome and childhood autism is reported. Areas of further research including prevalence studies, psychopathology and investigation for underlying genetic aetiological factors are discussed.

Examines the effect of stress on carers of children with learning difficulties. One family's problems, in relation to their psychological well-being, are related to relevant ideas, concepts and theories associated with stress and coping. Implications for future practice are also discussed.

Discusses the results of a study to produce an account of the situation of mothers caring for children with Down syndrome, using the Parenting Stress Index. A low internal reliability coefficient for the Adaptability/Plasticity Child Domain subscale raised questions regarding the validity of this scale for these children. A factor analysis of the scale itself found that the providing instead information on the types of coping strategies used by these children when they are required to adapt.
