A pretest–posttest one-group design was used with a sample of 24 adopted children who received attachment therapy in order to examine its effectiveness. RAD was measured with the Randolph Attachment Disorder Questionnaire (RADQ), Third Edition; functional impairment was measured with the Child and Adolescent Functional Assessment Scale (CAFAS). Statistically significant decreases in scores on the RADQ and CAFAS from pretests to posttests indicate improvement for the children who received therapy. It is concluded that in spite of methodological limitations, the current study adds to the limited knowledge about effective treatment for RAD.

The Swedish social service system accounts for 25-50% of total municipal outlays. The total cost incurred for children’s services in 2007 was 12.2 billion SEK, representing an increase of 12% since 2005. This study investigated the costs and benefits associated with multi-systemic therapy (MST) for conduct disordered young people, 2 years following intake. The study utilised a secondary analysis of 156 youth enrolled in a randomised trial assessing the psychosocial and behavioural outcomes of MST. Findings revealed that MST cost, on average, 105,400 SEK per young person. MST was associated with a direct benefit to participants of 1,000 SEK per young person and positively impacted the use of non-placement downstream interventions for a benefit of 62,100 SEK per person. However, these benefits did not offset the cost of MST. The author concluded that MST was associated with a net loss to society of 44,500 SEK per young person, after just 2 years.

Obsessional ruminations (obsessions without any accompanying overt compulsive behaviour) were previously considered especially difficult to treat. Discusses cognitive-behavioural theory regarding obsessional problem and reviews strategies for therapy developed on the basis of this theory.

Social workers can use pharmacological knowledge in collaboration with physicians to treat individuals who suffer from panic disorder and panic disorder with agoraphobia. Presents an overview of research and clinical findings the pharmacological treatment of panic disorder, including information about types of appropriate medication and their dosages, efficacy, side effects, and assessment of medication effects. The use of alternative treatments, including cognitive behaviour therapy, alone or in conjunction with psychotropic medications in treating panic disorder, is also discussed.

Aromatherapy and massage could provide a useful addition to psychological therapeutic interventions with clients suffering from dementia. Evaluates the effects of aromatherapy and massage on disturbed behaviour in four individuals with severe dementia using a single-case research design. Results found that the treatments were mixed. The opinion of the staff providing treatment was that all participants benefited. On close scrutiny, only one of the participants benefited from the aromatherapy and massage to a degree that reached statistical significance. In two of the cases aromatherapy and massage led to an increase in agitated behaviour. The importance of the single case study approach with this client group is discussed.

It is widely claimed that locus of control represents an important focus for the counselling of children with learning and/or behaviour difficulties. But the concept is widely misunderstood and often confused with other important control-related constructs. The meaning of a number of key constructs is clarified. An approach to counselling is advocated which recognises the heuristic and therapeutic value of employing these in a discrete, yet integrated fashion.

Examines the effect of child sexual abuse, defined three different ways, and three definitions of adult sexual assault on revictimization rates. Child definitions varied in the degree of contact; adult definitions varied in degree of contact and force used. Variables hypothesized to mediate the rate of revictimization included parental support, attributional style, coping style, severity of abuse, and involvement in psychotherapy. Subjects were college females. Contact forms of child sexual abuse were associated with significant rates of revictimization, although noncontact child sexual abuse was not associated with revictimization. Revictimized women could not be discriminated from nonrevictimized women on the basis of the proposed mediating variables. Level of adult sexual abuse experience was the best predictor of adult sexual assault. High levels of sexual activity is proposed as the link between child sexual abuse and adult sexual assault.

Parent management training programmes for the treatment of childhood conduct problems are increasingly being transported from their country of origin to international settings. Family interactions, however, may be influenced by different cultural expectations and children's mental health problems may be addressed within different systems. Demonstrating reductions in symptoms within the new population is insufficient to support the wide-scale transport of a treatment model. Implementation outcomes such as the rates of treatment retention and factors related to treatment attrition must also be considered. The authors explored predictors of attrition in families from the Netherlands referred to the evidence-based parenting programme Parent–Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). Participants included 40 children with conduct problems (2–7 years; 68% boys) and their caregivers. Attrition (40%) was somewhat lower than findings with similar community samples in the US. Significant predictors of attrition were child age and maternal levels of internalising symptoms. Low parental demandingness and high child compliance before start of treatment were related to early attrition within twelve treatment sessions. Meeting the needs of families at risk for attrition is an important goal for parent management training programmes within and outside the US if families in need of services are to benefit from them.
