In 2008, the Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority (RQIA) began a two-year review of child protection services in Northern Ireland, focusing on selected recommendations from 'Our Children and Young People Our Shared Responsibility' (the SSI Overview Report). For stage 1, a review team comprising experienced, independent peer reviewers from across the UK analysed action plans completed by each Health and Social Care Trust in response to the SSI Overview Report, trusts provided self-assessed scores to describe their progress against the implementation of each of the recommendations from the SSI Overview Report, and executive and non-executive officers were interviewed. This report includes the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust self-assessment and the findings of the review team. The one key recommendation for the Trust was that: the Trust should provide a 24 hour on call system for medical input to child protection cases.
