This publication provides a practical account of how people labelled as autistic can come to behave in ways that give rise to concern in other people, and sometimes themselves. The needs people with autism may express though these behaviours are identified and strategies for addressing both needs and behaviours are provided. Part 1 introduces the issues by looking at the difficulties faced by people with autism and the broad behaviours that get identified as problematic. Part 2 contains eight chapters that deal with the range of needs that may contribute to behaviours that cause concern and ways of meeting these needs. The chapters in this section cover: maintaining a safe environment, understanding, social relating, well being, competence, obessions, sensitivities and motivation. Each chapter covers general principles followed by a 'tips and hints' section which offers more specific help on possible solutions. Part 3 covers putting changes into practice.

People with developmental disabilities sometimes behave in ways that others, or they themselves, regard as problematic. This original book is about what practitioners can do to make sense of behaviours, in order to support clients more effectively. The author offers practical strategies for gathering and analysing information about behaviours, in partnership with the individual concerned, in order to gain a useful understanding of why a particular behaviour occurs. The inclusion of case histories, with corresponding behaviour plans, clearly demonstrates the real-life application of assessment methods.

People with autism spectrum conditions may often behave in ways that cause difficulties for themselves and those who care for them. This book offers long-term strategies to help resolve common problem behaviors such as physical aggression, self-injury, verbal abuse, rudeness and property damage. The book is organized around the common messages conveyed by behaviors and some of the underlying issues that drive these messages. Practical ideas for intervention are provided and illustrated by case examples. A range of exercises help to build understanding of the issues and detail appropriate plans. A log book helps to track what has been tried and what has been learned. In addition the author explores the role of relationship ‘styles' that can help reduce challenging behaviors and encourage positive ones. Realistic information about working together with individuals, families and outside agencies, and about the pros and cons of medication, is also included.

This article seeks to define gender issues and explores the significance of these issues for challenging behaviour in the field of learning disability. It is argues that lack of awareness about these issues contributes to the development of challenging behaviour and to difficulties in identifying the needs expressed through these behaviours, whatever their origin. Specific areas examined include models of residential provision for adults, prioritisation of service activities, attribution processes (needs identification), and the sexuality of people with learning disabilities. In each area issues are raised and the implications for service practice defined.
