Recent pronoucements from both government and carers' organisations have expressed disappointment at the low numbers of carers' assessments being undertaken by social care practitioners. Explanations include bureaucratic incompetence or practitioner attitudes. This article argues that for many practitioners, the very nature of the relationship with carers is a problematic one, containing several interrelated areas of confusion, ambiguity and tension. Discusses some of the major concerns and argues that the tensions, ambiguities and confusion experienced help to explain the less than full engagement by some practitioners with the carers' agenda as prompted by carers' organisations and government policy. Includes discussion of carers as resources, carers as co-workers and carers as co-clients.
Advancing through retreating: self-care among helping practitioners

This research was conducted in Cape Town among a non-probability sample of 16 helping practitioners who are also retreatants. A literature review describes the value of retreats and retreating and informs the empirical study, supporting the view that helping practitioners have not only the ability but also a duty to care for themselves. The empirical research explores respondents' perceptions and explanations of their retreating experience in their own words. Six themes emerged. Discussion identifies the efficacy of retreating as a self-care tool among helping practitioners. Retreatants yearn for recuperative silence and reflective opportunities remedying the stress and pace of modern living. By retreating they experience not only an avoidance of burnout but also an enhancement of functioning and well-being. The tools used have as much value outside the retreat setting as in it. Eight recommendations encourage the development of self-awareness and self-care practices related to retreating, including making space for this development in the workplace.
