This paper describes the adaptation and transfer of the CHAMP (Collaborative HIV-prevention Adolescent Mental Health) Family Program from its original setting in a low income area of Chicago to the Caribbean island of Trinidad and Tobago where adolescents and young adults comprise the majority of new HIV AIDS cases. The adaptation of the programme to create CHAMP-TT is described, and the results of small scale piloting with 32 participants (16 parents and 16 adolescents) are presented. They indicate: high participant retention; statistically significant pre-test to post-test changes in HIV AIDS knowledge and awareness; increased frequency of parent-youth discussions about HIV AIDS-related issues at home; condom self-efficacy; and parental monitoring. Wider lessons about the development of cross-national collaborative partnerships for the adaptation and transfer of interventions are also outlined.
