A 60 year old woman, with a three year diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, talks to the authors about the strength she has discovered since her diagnosis. In this second conversation she describes how her life events seem to have prepared her not only to cope, but also to grasp new opportunities. She explains the benefits of her role as a member of Scottish Dementia Working Group and the positive impact her illness has had on others as well as herself; the interviewer calls Agnes a “turning point person”. The key message from the interview is, don’t be so focussed on the goal that you miss the journey. Dementia has brought Agnes new skills and, she believes, made her more emotional. She explains how she copes with the possibility of depression and the ways she has adapted to the condition. Seeing how differently others are affected, especially those in the later stages, can lead to embarrassment at appearing to function too well and doubts about the diagnosis in herself and those she meets. Agnes believes that dementia has brought out different aspect of her personality and revealed new likes and dislikes; she concludes “maybe at last allowing people to see the real Agnes”.
