Earlier research about people's attitudes and behaviours relating to communications technologies identified five segments, or attitudes and behaviours to technology. This report looks in detail at the three identified segments that had a lower level of engagement to technology. These are referred to as: Resistors, Hesitants and Economisers. It looks at the different segments to examine the different ways in which the development and promotion of media literacy can be targeted at these specific groups. First the report examines the segment size within the UK adult population, and then looks at specific demographic profiles. The remaining three sections of the report discusses Access to digital media, covering use of different platforms, reasons for none take up; Understand and create, which includes understanding and interest in different features; and preferred methods of learning about digital technology.

Provides new figures on the number of children assessed to be in need by Children’s Social Services, for the six month period from 1 October 2008 to 31 March 2009. The figures are compiled from the new 2008-09 Children in Need (CIN) census which replaces the previous census last completed in 2005. Figures from the 2008-09 CIN census are not directly comparable to these earlier figures. The figures presented here include information from 148 Local Authorities who submitted data in 2008-09. The statistics are published as experimental as they are still being evaluated and remain subject to further testing. They should therefore be treated with caution. This release provides figures for numbers of children experiencing an episode of need analysed by gender and age (including unborn); ethnicity; primary need at initial assessment; and asylum seeking status.
