Part of the Models of Research Impact: a Cross-Sector Review project, this paper reports the results of a cross-sector literature review of the research impact field. It provides an overview of the literature on approaches to enhancing research use from the education, healthcare, social care and criminal justice sectors, looking at the conceptual frameworks and models which guide research impact thinking and practice, providing evidence on the success of different practices which aim to enhance research impact, and examining how effectiveness of research impact is best assessed. 341 full text papers from 1990 onwards were identified as meeting the review selection criteria, with 125 empirical papers providing the core data for evidence of effectiveness of different practices to enhance research impact. The paper describes the scope, methods and findings of the review, and looks at practices for effective research impact including defining and assessing research impact, practices to enhance impact, and barriers to effective research impact.
