Describes and discusses a pilot programme carried out in Anchor Homes which aims to develop in-house learning programmes for all staff delivering front-line care to provide common and consistent care practices. The Foundation in Care Pilot was an outcome of the Anchor Management Development Programme. Part 2 of this article will be concerned with the evaluation of the Pilot Programme.
Distance learning routes to the diploma in social work: the distance learning student in the workplace

This article is based on an evaluation of the North of Scotland Consortium's distance learning route to the DipSW. This article discusses the findings in relation to the distance learning student in the workplace - in particular the benefits and difficulties associated with being a DipSW student whilst continuing in employment, the impact of the programme upon the student's colleagues and service-users and the relationship between the student's employing organisation and the programme. Also looks at the extent of support students receive from their employer and other positives and negatives associated with being a distance learning student.

In 1992, the Central Council for Education and Training in Social Work (CCETSW) chose eight Diploma in Social Work (DipSW) Programmes to offer additional places to managers without social work qualifications in residential child care settings. The debate as to whether residential workers should have a separate qualification with a syllabus drawn up specifically for residential work, or share a qualification with field social workers continues. This article looks at the experiences of four of the Residential Child Care Initiative (RCCI) programmes in delivering the DipSW to student groups including cohorts of RCCI students.

This article discusses the feedback from these linked workshops, covering staff management and development topics, and looks at how staff are applying their training in their respective workplaces.
