Volunteers in Child Protection (ViCP) matches volunteers to families with one or more children suffering from neglect and who are at risk of significant harm. CSV’s volunteers provide support and encouragement to help these families address the many problems they face and ultimately assist them in turning a chaotic, dysfunctional home into a happy, stable and safe environment in which they can thrive. The aim of this research was to assess the value of this intervention for families, volunteers and stakeholders, including social workers and commissioners. The ViCP project in Southend was evaluated over a period of 18 months. The evaluation included: interrogation of case files and data for 37 families; questionnaires of mental wellbeing completed by 13 families; and semi-structured interviews with families, volunteers, and relevant professionals. This executive summary considers the findings, including whether ViCP is effective in its use of volunteers, whether it leads to improvement in safeguarding concern, and whether it offers value for money and cost savings. It concludes that the project delivers positive outcomes for services users, volunteers, and stakeholders, and also provides good value for money.

New report released April 2008 exploring the beneficial effects of volunteering on mental illness. The report, Mental health, volunteering and social inclusion, draws on the findings of independent research studies into the following schemes to highlight how volunteering can help improve the health of people living with mental illness: Capital Volunteering, a London based project helping mental health service users to reduce their dependence on hospital-based and crisis mental health services in the future, to develop skills and confidence, and to help them become more socially included. This model has been effective in engaging black and minority ethnic service users (44% are from a BME background) Aloyse Raptopoulos experiences bi-polar affective disorder and has been admitted to a psychiatric unit several times. She wanted to get a job that she found fulfilling and volunteered to help others in mental distress through befriending, supporting and escorting others which helped her return to paid work. Aloyse says: "Volunteering contributes a great deal to satisfying my goals in life; it benefits my mental state and keeps me grounded. I have now started my own business as a self-employed trainer & consultant in mental health. Volunteering helps me cope. It anchors me, gives me breathing space, helps me keep the balance between my favourite hobby [music] and my work."

The research found that volunteers can break social isolation and improve independence and well-being among older people. Researchers found that 83 per cent of older people who receive volunteer support, report improvements in their quality of life. The report found that volunteers can boost people’s confidence and self-esteem, because someone who isn’t being paid thinks they are important enough to care about. The research noted the wide range of tasks carried out by volunteers, which are often not provided by any other sector, such as dog-walking, accompanying people to doctor appointments and helping with housework. Volunteers provide a service different from but complementary to the statutory sector. The report argues that this should be encouraged and developed and recommends that volunteers be treated as part of a very broad public services system.
