Written by the Sri Lankan mother of Steven, a 15 year old autistic boy, this book gives insight into living with young people who don’t communicate in conventional ways. She stresses that, for those with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) living in the UK, NHS and local authority support is challenging. Home schooling and Steven’s unmet needs in schools are highlighted. Chapter 1 maps the journey from onset of autism, detecting differences, diagnosis and how parents deal with their family life, to feeling stressed about commitment. It also details five common medical tests, public awareness, labels, parental help, denial and lists over 25 symptoms of autism including, hyperactivity and poor verbal/non verbal communication. Chapter 2 addresses MMR vaccination and what autistic children can teach you. Steven’s developmental history in Saudi Arabia, UK, travelling in New Zealand, on the birth of a sister and whilst being taught, is described and followed by comments on education, occupational therapy and other treatments. The author asks if services are effective, describes statements, their code of practice, five stages, and the battle for rights in education. She concludes with information on ASD research.

One in four

'One In Four' uses a mixture of prose and poetry to tell the important and tragic story of a teenage boy who becomes seriously mentally ill, with paranoid schizophrenia, from a mother's point of view. It travels with her and her son through the quagmire of 'Care In The Community' and the problems of living on the cusp of two counties. This excellent narrative shows how people can slip through the net, leading, in this instance, to the death of a very much loved child, brother, and grandson. Joy's son did not want to die, it was the illness that killed him, aggravated by the neglect of the hospital he was in. The story travels through the effect this tragedy has had on the mother and the struggle she has coming to terms with the loss of her son. This is a wonderfully poignant, if emotionally involving book. A fitting memorial to Edward. About the Author I found writing this cathartic though upsetting at times. It brought back my troubled childhood, though I do not go into detail in my book, and a difficult twenty-five year marriage

Novel about the trials of growing up and about the prejudice projected onto those who have had mental health problems and their families. Jeffery understands the basis of victimisation and alienation: the fears and insecurities of the perpetrators themselves. But this is no simplistic moralistic tale. Through his close understanding of human emotion and communication, Jeffery shows that it is possible for victim and perpetrator to simultaneously exist within us all and, ultimately, to change.

Overcoming the label of learning disability may be an achievement but also triumphing over the obstacles caused by prejudice at being labelled with schizophrenia is highly unusual. Philip Hill uses his auto-biographical account to describe the ways in which he overcame the rejection of his peer group at school neighbourhood and how he used his experiences of mental illness to help others like himself before going on to train as a social worker. This amazing account of triumph over adversity should be an inspiration to other people who find themselves labelled with severe mental illness. The honest and thought provoking way Philip describes his symptoms should enable the layperson to gain an ‘insiders’ insight on what it like to suffer from the active symptoms of Schizophrenia. This book will hopefully challenge the stereotypes surrounding Schizophrenia.

He now dedicates his life to helping others afflicted by mental illness. This is all a far cry from the young man who spent most of his formative years in and out of hospitals and teetering on the edge of addiction.
