Online exploitation of children in care has become a major issue. As part of Norfolk's Computers for Pupils scheme, approximately 400 laptops have been given out to looked-after children in Norfolk. To increase children's safety the laptops have been installed with online filters to monitor internet usage and pick up phases or images that could be a cause of concern - from sexually explicit material, to harassment and sexual grooming.

Key findings from a literature review of international and UK research on adolescent neglect are presented. The review found a lack of research and practice evidence on adolescent neglect. No interventions aimed specifically at adolescent neglect were identified. The report also identified a need for a shared definition of neglect in the context of working with adolescents.

All the UK nations are assessing the way they handle reviews into child protection cases. As part of their new approach, Wales has now removed the requirement to conduct a serious case review in the event of a teen suicide. Cases will be categorised as either: multi-agency event, concise review, or comprehensive review. It is hoped the changes will cut costs and also allow councils to implement any necessary changes more quickly. Overviews of current practice in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland are also provided.

Disorganised attachment refers to behaviours displayed by children if they find themselves in anxiety provoking situations into which an abusive caregiver enters. This article looks at the latest evidence on disorganised attachment. It briefly draws on the findings of a review of recent research, a Maltreatment Pathway Model and the Assessment of Disorganised Attachment and Maltreatment project. A list of practice points to consider when observing interactions between a child and their parents are included. Key texts and further reading are also suggested.

Research which sought to improve practice regarding safeguarding of young people aged between 11 and 17 who are maltreated is reviewed. The study consisted of a literature review, a policy study, a survey of professionals and a study of practice. The study highlights the importance of adopting a development perspective. Many key issues are raised, including the potential for referrers and social care professionals to underestimate the risks of long-term negative outcomes for young people in cases of maltreatment. Self-reports of child maltreatment are likely to be far lower than actual rates.
