The objective of this article is to shed light on the relationship between unemployment and financial hardship/recession on the one hand and suicide of young persons on the other, based partly on a review of the literature and partly on a tentative analysis of data from Sweden.

Looks at how the Nordic countries are often perceived as representing a special type of welfare state. This article focuses on arrangements directed towards poor and marginalised people, which in most country are social assistance schemes. Argues that it is difficult to distinguish a particular Nordic approach for two reasons. Concludes by identifying an approach towards poor and marginalised people that is common in small, communitarian affluent and homogenous countries.
