Parents with a learning disability often have their parenting skills brought into question and may even face child protection proceedings. The Walsall Parents advocacy service and the North East Parents' Support Services support parents with learning difficulties to understand the child protection system and to help parents get their voices heard. This article presents brief findings of an evaluation of the two services, which was carried out by the University of Bristol's Norah Fry Research Centre.

More and more people with a learning disability are choosing to become parents yet between 40-60% of them will at some stage have their children taken away from them. While the recent media storm around an Essex's couple's fight to keep their children has at times masked the true complexity of this once hidden issue, it has at least brought it into the public domain. This article looks at the details of the court case and discusses support available to parents with learning disabilities.
