This review paints a picture of the varied field of community and neighbourhood mediation in the UK. It examines the main models of service provision and how this provision is funded; it charts the nature of disputes referred to local services and the variety of mediation interventions; and it examines quality issues and the impact of the Community Legal Service’s Quality Mark for mediation services. A final chapter identifies future trends and tensions for the sector. These include the increasing use of paid mediators (as opposed to volunteers), the willingness of some services to tackle race disputes and hate crimes, and how services can promote sustainability and local capacity-building.
