Based on quantitative and qualitative data from 261 young people across England, the study explores a number of key areas. These include education, employment and training, housing and homelessness, crime and delinquency, identity, and preparation and after care support. The study also incorporates social work professionals' views on the process preparing young people for leaving care and after-care experiences. The overwhelming finding of this study is that the needs of different ethnic groups are very similar. Experience when in care plays an important role in the subsequent opportunities of young people. Overall, the experiences of Asian and African young people were generally positive; white, mixed parentage and Caribbean young people faced relative deprivation and disadvantage. These findings are evidence of the complexity of ethnicity and multiple disadvantage which care leavers face.
