The author suggests that the social care system and the “stranglehold” of professional self-interest groups place many obstacles in the way of self-directed support. He offers advice on how to avoid these. His article is one of a series from the National Brokerage Network exploring aspects of how to put support brokerage into practice. This article gives a list of do's and don’ts as ground rules for brokerage and the provision of information, advice and guidance. The author then goes on to offer advice for anyone wanting to provide such a service, for example; focus on the local area, make use of free policies, procedures and paper sets on the National Brokerage Network website, and make it clear to clients what is on offer for what contribution. Future articles will look at how to fund support brokerage and possibly earn a living at it.
