A legacy of trauma

Recent research examined the characteristics of one of the largest sample of young people showing harmful sexual behaviour in the UK. In partnership with nine organisations offering community and residential services, the agency records relating to 700 children and young people referred between 1992 and 2000 for interventions to address harmful sexual behaviours. One of the findings was the significant number who had experienced sexual abuse. The authors highlight the importance of recognising the complex needs of a large number of children and young people presenting with 'dual sexual abuse experiences'. (Original abstract)

The author reviews research into the key issues that determine satisfactory and unsatisfactory contact between looked-after children and young people and their birth parents. The study looked at views on birth family contact across 11 local authorities between 2009 and 2012 as part of the evaluation of social work practice pilots. Key issues associated with satisfaction and dissatisfaction included: involvement in decision making; speed and flexibility; practical issues such as assistance with travel; information and emotional support; and building relationships. The research highlight the importance of relationships and resources, including social workers time, in achieving satisfactory contact arrangements. (Original abstract)

This continuing professional development training guide has been developed for educators and trainers to help improve and standardise social work training in fostering and adoption. The framework lists the key areas that should be included to improve social workers understanding of reunification, family and friends care, long-term foster care, special guardianship and adoption. Topics are listed under the following headings: knowledge; critical reflection and analysis; skills and intervention; contexts; organisations and leadership. Approved mental health professionals (AMHPs) are specialists (usually social workers) who undertakes assessments for detention under the Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended 2007). The tool is designed to enable social worker AMHPs to map their continuing professional development to the standards of proficiency required for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council. Areas of competency considered are: professionalism; values and ethics; diversity; rights, justice and economic wellbeing; knowledge; critical reflection and analysis; intervention and skills; contexts and organisations; and professional leadership.
