Findings from a review of research into health and care professional regulation. The three key objectives for this research were: to source research in the area of health and care professional regulation in English since 2011; to evaluate the research and draw out what it has taught us; and to identify any gaps in the research and areas that would benefit from deeper exploration to inform the focus of further research and continue to build the evidence base in relation to health and care professional regulation. In terms of what the literature has taught us, the key themes are grouped into six areas, including education, guidelines and standards, ensuring fitness to practise, misconduct, complaints and disciplinary procedures, training and harm prevention and patient safety. A strong overall finding to emerge from the work is that – whereas health and care professional regulation studies is rapidly emerging as a new field – it is still less developed compared with other areas, such as financial, legal or aviation regulation studies. The health and social care professional regulators have an opportunity to work together both to define and to set an agenda for this new field by engaging with the peer reviewed literature, developing and enhancing the skills of their policy and research teams around academic practice, and ensuring that as commissioners and consumers of research in health and care professions regulation they are seen to be demanding evidence of the highest possible quality on which to base their activities. The network mission is to strengthen the social care capacity in R&D in Wales. This means improving welfare by improving social science understanding of people’s perspectives and needs, and improving the ability of welfare services to assist people to create and maintain their own wellbeing and quality of life. It will place the needs of people who use social care services at the heart of its work, ensuring a strong voice for their views on what kinds of R&D should be undertaken. It will operate inclusive policies so that representatives of those who receive and who provide social care services have a say in its work.
