This book, part of the Parenting Matters series, is concerned with the emotional and behavioural difficulties and the special needs of children, particularly adopted and looked after children, who have these issues. Like the other books in the series it is designed to help prospective adopters and carers decide whether they can care for a child with a health need or condition they know little about. It uses a combination of expert information and first-hand experiences to provide the; knowledge necessary for understanding and decisions making. This book focuses on emotional and behavioural difficulties, a common diagnosis in looked after children. The first half starts with a short explanation of emotional and behavioural difficulties and what these terms mean for the children. Symptoms, prognosis, and treatment are outlined. The author goes on to examine: the different ways in which behavioural and emotional difficulties can affect child development; the issues these conditions raise with regard to educational provision; and where and how to get help. The second section tells the story of one couple, and their experiences parenting; children with emotional and behavioural difficulties and how this affected day–to-day family life.

Initiated in 1992 because of the major uncertainties about what would happen to children adopted by UK families from extremely depriving Romanian institutions, the ERA study has been reported on, at initial and then follow-up stages, over the past 17 years, with the most recent findings published in 2009. This book considers the policy and practice implications of what has been learned through this longitudinal study. It tackles those questions most often posed by practitioners and policy makers including the following: does the removal from institutions and the adoption into well functioning families bring about recovery for these children?; what are the challenges for the children and for the adopting families?; what are the effects on the young people of leaving institutional care?; what are the effects of deprivation on physical development and psychological functioning?; what are the service implications of these? It will be of great interest, both in the UK and internationally, to practitioners, policy makers, adoptive families, academics and all others interested in the outcomes for children adopted into the UK from institutions overseas.

This adoption support study aimed to discover whether the addition of one-to-one parenting advice made a difference with a comparison group receiving routine support services. Thirty-seven families with children suffering from serious behaviour problems were recruited to the study. The participants were randomly allocated to one of two interventions consisting of 10, weekly sessions of home-based parenting advice or a control group. None of the control group received a services that were similar. Appendices include a summary of two intervention manuals and assessment tools. The findings suggested that home-based parenting programme for adopters resulted in positive changes in parenting satisfaction, but did not prove more effective than 'usual services' in reducing child behaviour problems within the timescale of the evaluation. The study was part of the Department for Children, Schools and Families Adoption Research Initiative.
