The purpose of this book, now in its fifth edition, is to highlight for adoptive parents some of the key aspects of helping a child to understand their history and the circumstances that led them to join the family. It covers the whys, whens and hows of telling the truth about an adopted child’s origins. Based on the experiences of adoptive parents and children, it does not claim to be a definitive text but rather aims to encourage creativity and imagination in responding to adoptive children. Topics covered include: why telling a child is so important; what to tell a child and when; the responsibilities to be faced if the child is of a different ethnicity or from a different country; how adopted children and their birth parents feel; how to trace birth parents; and where you can get more help. This new edition also includes more information on contact, including social networking websites, adoption support and foster carers and adoption. A comprehensive list of useful organisations and resources directs parents to other sources of support. The focus of the book is practical and it includes advice and ideas suitable for children of all ages. These are brought to life with case studies.

This guide is designed to help social workers manage and complete a comprehensive and evidence-based assessment of prospective applicants who want to foster a child. It is for use by assessing social workers completing BAAF Form F (Fostering) Scotland. The guide is primarily based on Section B of the form which pulls together information about the applicant; their individual profile, family, environmental factors, and present circumstances. The guide is divided into three broad sections which mirror the parts of Section B. Each section presents a list of trigger questions that can facilitate further discussion and encourage exploration of different areas and suggestions as to how this can be analysed to assess an applicant’s ability, or not, to foster. It includes guidance on kinship care assessments. The Guide will also assist in linking the information collected and its analysis to the Getting it Right for Every Child (GIRFEC) well-being indicators and the BAAF Competencies for Fostering. It is cross-referenced throughout to the GIRFEC indicators and competencies. Worksheets are included to help assessors to plan and keep track of ongoing assessments, and checklists cover safer caring, completing ecomaps and health and safety issues.
