Conversations with researchers about family caregiving: trends and future directions

In this American study the authors conducted a series of interviews with 13 prominent scholars who have contributed to knowledge about family caregiving. Caregiver researchers were identified using the Delphi technique according to their research focus and contributions and then a guide for the interviews was developed. The information gained from the interviews is outlined under the themes of: the evolution of caregiving research and knowledge; established, but inconsistent knowledge; and methodological issues.

At a time when information on new treatment is rapidly growing, clinicians are challenged to identify the interventions that are best supported by the research literature. This challenge is particularly daunting in the field of mental health because the number of well designed treatment studies is relatively small and treatments designed for younger people must be applied to a geriatric population which may respond in a different way.
