This memoir describes the author’s career in social work which stretched from the 1960s to the new millennium. When she began work her colleagues were looked up to and respected. She suggests that the modern-day social worker has become one of society's most beleaguered professionals, haunted by scandal, charges of incompetence and constant media sniping. Only the downside of local authority work reaches the media resulting in much good work going unnoticed and social workers becoming society’s scapegoats. Social workers are said to be notoriously inept at standing up for themselves and the author takes up their cause aiming to show the inside story of social work, its hurdles and development, and the extraordinary situations and people she came up against in her own long career.
