New provisions on the law on contact will be introduced into the Children Act 1989 on December 8, 2008. The changes aim to make contact orders more effective by promoting contact with the child. The author provides an overview of the role of 'special guardian'. The 'special guardian' provides a sense of permanency and security, similar to an adoptive parent, but they do not become a parent themselves nor is the child taken out of his birth family.
