Domestic adoption is a relatively recent phenomenon in Romania. Most of the children adopted in Romania are under 3 years of age and clinically healthy. The aim of this study was to explore the stressors that the Romanian adoptive families are confronted with during the different stages of the adoption experience, the coping strategies that they adopt, and the resources needed and available to them to respond to these stressors. The study participants were a purposive sample composed of 9 mothers that had adopted children between 5 months and 5 years old between 1 and 3 years earlier. Narrative interviews were used to discuss the mothers’ experiences of adoption and its stressors. The main emergent themes in the interviews were: the desire to have a child and the infertility; the adoption procedure; the uncertainty regarding the moment of placement; the instant adoption of the parental role-status; the lack of information about the child; the costs; the specific development problems of the adopted child; and the communication about the adoption with the child. Each of these themes is discussed together with the coping strategies adopted by the families and the available resources. The article concludes with some reflections concerning the adaptation of Romanian families in the adoption process.
