Carefully planned Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) programmes can be introduced to enhance the therapeutic milieu as an addition to client care. This paper provides on overview of the role of animals in institutions. The author draws on her experience with particular reference to a programme in a prison-based therapeutic community. A multidisciplinary approach is emphasised.

Pet Facilitated Therapy (PFT) is a goal-directed intervention in which animals are central to the treatment process. PFT is designed to promote improvements in human, social, physical, emotional and/or cognitive functioning. PFT has been successfully introduced into all types of residential institutions, with many benefits of residents and staff.
