A NSPCC project 'Pregnancy, Birth and Beyond' providing vulnerable families with support and guidance as new parents is described. The project targets disadvantaged families, including people under 20 and those experiencing problems including homelessness, substance misuse, learning disabilities, mental health problems and severe poverty. Families attend 8 workshops which are run jointly by health professionals and NSPCC children's services staff, and can then keep in touch with the project if they wish. The project aims to promote secure attachment between parents and children as a way of preventing maltreatment.
