In the past few years Ireland has experienced a massive increase in the number of refugees and asylum seekers arriving. This large influx has stretched the capacity of the system that processes refugee status applications, and has also generated a high level of debate and controversy, which some feel has shown a different side to Irish society. This attention though has not been focused on on the needs of refugee children. They make up a large proportion of the applicants for refugee status and all are very traumatised and vulnerable from their experiences in their homelands. Many of them are often unaccompanied and it is this group in particular that are most vulnerable. Until very recently there were little or no refugees in Ireland. In 1999 there were approximately 200 but by the end of 2000 this had increased to 71 a month and, unsurprisingly the immigration and welfare services are struggling to cope. This briefing urges the Irish government to address this problem as soon as possible. It uses the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child to argue that the needs of all children in Ireland, not just Irish children, are one and the same and that effective and prompt action is needed straight away.
