Policy and practice affecting children, young people and their families in Scotland is based on the Getting It Right for Every Child approach. Acknowledging that risk is a difficult and complex concept, this framework and guidance aims to support and assist practitioners at all levels in approaching the task of risk identification, assessment, analysis and management with children and families. This document describes the core components of the framework (risk, resilience and resistance), and its key principles (involving children and families, practitioners working together, and evidence-based practice). It provides a step-by-step guide to using the framework and its staged approach to risk assessment, covering collection and collation of information, risk analysis, and risk management; risk tools are also included. It is designed to be used in conjunction with the Getting It Right for Every Child National Practice Model, and is underpinned by the definition of risk and significant harm set out in the National Child Protection Guidance for Scotland.
