This themed review provides an overview of recent research funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) on support for people living with severe mental illness, such as schizophrenia and psychosis. It includes 30 published studies covering the areas of: supporting early detection and intervention; crisis care - such as improving care on inpatient wards and developing alternatives to hospitals; supporting recovery and self-management, including research on using digital technology and peer support; and managing physical and mental health and planning for future care. The review also highlights examples of ongoing research and areas where more research is needed. It includes short summaries of each of the published studies. (Edited publisher abstract)
