Alcohol Concern was funded by the Big Lottery Fund in the 3 year Embrace project to assist alcohol services to work more effectively on overlapping issues of alcohol problems, domestic abuse, children and families. The project included lobbying, raising awareness, and supporting pilot sites. This report gives an overview of the experiences of the 9 pilot sites (in Blackpool, Rochdale, Hull, Nottingham, Northampton, London, Gateshead, Sunderland, and Birmingham) as the Embrace team trained and guided them in developing the Embrace model. It describes the background and the Embrace model, looks at resources aimed at alcohol services and others working with families, alcohol and domestic abuse, highlights challenges and barriers the pilot sites experienced, and discusses pilot site outcomes including development of practice in terms of working with domestic abuse and families. It includes brief case studies and pointers for alcohol services. The report concludes that much has been achieved, with awareness raised, practice improved, and families being supported, but that more can and must be done. It sets out recommendations for commissioners and for specialist alcohol services providers.
