Relatively little research has been done on the perspectives of practitioners on dignity compared to the perspectives of patients and carers. This report, published by the Royal College of Nursing in June 2008, is based on an RCN membership survey of more than 2,000 nurses, students and health care assistants which aimed to obtain the perspectives of participants regarding the maintenance and promotion of dignity in everyday practice. The survey was carried out between February and March 2008 and is one of a range of initiatives that underpin the RCN Dignity Campaign launched in June 2008. The content of the report is structured around the questionnaire and includes sections on: a profile of respondents; initial and continuing education relating to dignity; dignity and the physical environment; individual/practitioner, team and organisational prioritisation of dignity; dignity and care activities; and ability to deliver dignifying care. Recommendations are presented under three categories – role of government (macro-level); role of organisations (meso-level) and role of individuals (micro-level).
