This article reports on the evaluation of a walking group for younger people diagnosed with dementia (aged under 65) through a memory clinic. The group was set up in 2008 in Pembrokeshire and aimed to provide: ongoing monitoring and specialist support, opportunities for recreational and physical activity, a group intervention to make cost-effective use or resources, and opportunity for carer respite. An evaluation was carried out using focus groups where a discussion of those participating in the group was recorded and transcribed, with participants consent. Participants' partners also completed a questionnaire on the benefits of the groups. Three key themes emerged: the creation of supportive and positive relationships, the desire for continuity for the group (need for alternative activities in bad weather and the impact of new comers to the group), and concern for former group members. There was agreement that the group provided a supportive environment and created positive interpersonal relationships. (Original abstract)
