This guidance has been developed to highlight some of the key health, safety and wellbeing issues associated with shift work; and support managers to work in partnership with union representatives to mitigate the impact on staff and the organisation. It sets out: how shift work can impact on health, safety and wellbeing; how to manage the risk as an organisation; how to manage the risk as an individual; and the importance of partnership working. Specific aspects covered in this document include: compliance with the Working Time Regulations; risk assessment of shift work; best practice for health, safety and wellbeing of shift working; and measures to reduce the individual health impacts and safety issues related to shift work. These cover: physical health; psychological health; sleeping; alertness at work; driving home; use of stimulants and sedatives; support from GP or occupational health; reporting concerns; and professional responsibilities.
