Handbook providing advice on key areas of concern for foster carers who foster teenagers and those supporting them, including their families, supervising social workers, children’s social workers, teachers, fostering providers and therapists. The handbook covers the following areas: starting placements; adolescent development; attachment; the STAGE framework for effective foster care; building relationships with teenagers; boundaries and rules; risk taking behaviour; sexuality and sexual health; expectations and aspirations; coordinating placements; and moving on from placements and the transition to independence. Each chapter includes a list of tips and discussion points for foster carers to self-reflect or for social workers to use in their discussions with carers. It has been informed by the findings of research and the ESRC seminar series ‘Teenagers in Foster Care’ which was attended by researchers, foster carers, young people, social workers and managers.
