Under the Health and Social Care Act 2008, providers of health and adult social care services must by law register with the Care Quality Commission if they carry on a regulated activity. This guidance clarifies the main differences between the two regulated activities of 'accommodation for persons who require nursing or personal care' and 'personal care', particularly in the context of supported living services. It also provides guidance on what indicators to look for when it is not clear which of the two regulated activities is being provided. Its coverage includes who needs to register and how the Care Quality Commission registers providers under the Act. It is intended to be used alongside the Commission's Scope of Registration publication.
