This guide provides a structured and accessible introduction to involving offenders and ex-offenders in the management, design, delivery and evaluation of the services aimed at them, including examples of good practice, checklists and signposting to further information and support. Voluntary and community organisations, statutory agencies and other groups working with offenders, ex-offenders and their families are constantly looking to improve the services they offer their service users. Service user involvement (SUI) is recognised as an effective tool to achieve this. This guide explains in detail what service user involvement is, and why and how to involve service users; how to get started, develop a strategy and attain a good understanding of the ethical and equality principles at play; how to prepare a project plan and deliver, looking at costs, accessibility, communication, evaluation and reporting and common problems and solutions; and how to recruit, reward and support service users to ensure they engage and contribute to the development and management of the services.
