Provides information and advice on recruiting ex-offenders. Over 20 per cent of the working-age population is recorded as having a criminal record on the Police National Computer (Home Office, 2014). Many employers who have knowingly hired ex-offenders reported a positive experience and indicated that these employees worked as hard, if not harder, than those with no convictions. Some employers, however, have great and exaggerated concerns about recruiting people with criminal records. This guide aims to address some of those concerns, explaining how to recruit safely and fairly. It outlines the relevant legislation and explains how to determine whether and how to carry out criminal record checks. The guide provides practical guidance on what to do if a criminal record or allegation is revealed on a check and how to assess the risk and relevance of criminal records.
