Abstract:

Artlink Central is a registered charity which believes that involvement in the arts is life-enhancing and should be available to all. They have delivered art workshops in prisons in Scotland for the past 14 years. This article presents findings from an ongoing evaluation of arts programmes from Artlink Central taking place in Cornton Vale, Scotland's main prison for women. The findings are based on feedback forms filled in by 112 women at the both the beginning and the end of the course in which they participated from April 2009 to April 2010. All the women reported feeling many positive impacts as a result in taking part in the course. They believed that they had grown in confidence and self-esteem, and had enjoying learning something new and meeting other women. The article discusses the findings and looks at international research in this area to argue that the arts can generate significant rehabilitative benefits for offenders. However, it concludes that the arts, like other rehabilitative efforts, are currently regarded as an ‘add on’ and, therefore, do not receive the credit or place they deserve in policy and consequently in practice.
