Abstract:

This account of the history of the Association of Therapeutic Communities (ATC) is an expanded and updated version of a contribution to a 2009 conference. The ATC was established in 1972 during a meeting of leading figures in the area of therapeutic communities. This account records the ups and downs of its development, from vigorous debates in the 1970s to its wider achievements in the 1980s, its near collapse and recovery in the 1990s, and professional recognition in the 21st century.  The contributions of some of its leading figures are outlined. The merger of the ATC and the Charterhouse Group to create The Council for Therapeutic Communities was formally approved at the annual conference in September 2011. The achievements of the ATC include the journal Therapeutic Communities, the long-running book series, the annual Windsor conference, regular training events, and the Quality Network Community of Communities.
