Abstract: |
This qualitative research project aimed to identify the views of parents about which items should be considered necessities for families with children. The reason for undertaking this work was to allow the updating of the questions used to measure material deprivation on the Family Resources Survey to reflect changes in what is considered a necessity. Eight focus groups comprising a total of 45 parents were conducted in summer 2009; 5 groups comprised parents with school aged children, and 3 comprised parents with children below school age. The participants were asked to identify specific items whose absence is likely to cause hardship to families unable to afford them. They were asked to focus on items that significant numbers of families in Britain today may have to go without. The findings are discussed under the following categories: the home; durable goods; goods for children’s leisure and development; leisure activities and social participation; food and clothing; transport; savings, debt and maintaining a standard; and keeping warm. The findings showed that there is a wide range of items that are considered necessities by parents, with priority given to those that affect social relationships in families and children's long-term health. |
