Abstract: |
This article reports on the innovative work of home improvement agencies in Merseyside and East Lancashire, supporting people with dementia to live at home for longer. ‘Retro-decorating’ helps address the emotional needs of those with dementia by providing vintage furnishings and ornaments that take them ‘back to a happy time’. Living among retro objects can provide reassurance in people with dementia and make them feel calmer, which may have implications for whether they are prescribed medication. Items that have an association with a particular task can also support individuals in remembering to have a wash, suit down for a meal, or take their medication. Retro-decorating techniques are used regularly in residential settings, but putting retro objects into people’s homes to support their independence is a new approach being used in Merseyside and East Lancashire. |
